Founded on naturalistic representations and drawing from the romantic tradition in European landscape portraiture, my paintings cover a spectrum of mood types. The images present elusive or ephemeral shifts in patterns of light captured at the climax of their interplay with the viscerally unyielding. The work embodies eternity and transience, darkness and light, creating the seductive sense of drama and longing that only a love affair with the elemental can.
In aspiring to capture such moments of peak intensity I hope to convey the vital and sublime temperament of the natural world.
The work draws from blended observational memories, unanticipated interpretations and the desire to set permanence to otherwise transitory emotions and instances. The imagery develops organically from cues and suggestions integral to the painting process, where moments of spontaneous direction can emerge whilst applying paint to the canvas and move a work to an unforeseen pinnacle of possibility.
